At this session Ditte Rønn will give insight into her creative process in creating outdoor spatial soundart at Rudolph Tegners Museum & Statuepark in northern zealand, Denmark. This listening session will also include insight into challenges, overall compositional and conceptual methods, as well as artistic thoughts about the potential in cross-aesthetic based soundart.
Her colleague and sounddesigner Yann Coppier, who has been spatial mixing the pieces together with Ditte, also gives a brief insight into his methods and thoughts using Spat Revolution in this case.

Just after this session the soundscape will be played in a version prepared for the immersive speaker system in the Atrium at UC-Syd/Sonic College. Be prepared for a unique listening experience.

A Linear Score in an Interactive Medium: The Music of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
Wednesday November 20, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
Doing justice to an epic story, told in the cinematic universe of Avatar, presented the music team at Massive Entertainment with a huge challenge. How can an interactive game fulfill the expectations set by the popular films?
In the presentation Lasse will demonstrate how the team implemented the Pinar Toprak’s beautiful score for the highly realized narrative campaign of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which not only supports the moment-to-moment action on screen, but also enhances the mood and the narrative by highlighting both the player’s and main character’s emotions and expectations.
Outside of the narrative campaign, Lasse will show the extensive music system used to make the open world music feel scripted, deliberate, and cinematic, despite the complete lack of linearity in gameplay.

Tracking and localization of sound at Det Kongelige Teater
Wednesday November 20, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
Sound localization is the process by which we can determine the origin of a sound.
Humans and animals use various clues, such as time delays and intensity differences between the ears,
to identify the direction of a sound. These techniques have been adopted in modern technology, to create immersive sound environment, and a more realistic connection between amplified and unamplified voice.
Since 2008, The Royal Danish Theatre has been utilizing various tracking systems to enhance their productions, creating invisible and transparent amplification of the actors. This presentation delves into the principles behind sound tracking and localization and how we have approached it at the Theater.

Decounstruction of Sound Good & Evil
Wednesday November 20, 2024 13:30 - 14:30 CET
In Else Marie Pades electronic music works from 1950s-1980s we find a rare combination of compositional strategies: ‘concrete sound’ recordings ranging from the sounds of everyday life to prepared acoustical instruments, side by side with pure electronic sounds, all manipulated and structured through compositional operations of strict serialism – composed for radio broadcast or to be performed as theatrical performances or as multimedia sound installations.
We are at the birth of electronic avantgarde music and musical modernism in Europe beginning in the 1950s, where the horrors of 2. World War permeats everything including art and music – much like today. In this atmosphere of trauma and hope Else Marie Pade discovers sound wave interference that she uses as an aesthetic technique to create a sonic continuum with ‘good’ and ‘evil’ as its opposite poles.
With this palette of early electronic sound techniques, what does war sound like? Doomsday sound like? Or love and salvation sound like?

Integration and interoperability in immersive live production
Wednesday November 20, 2024 13:30 - 14:30 CET

With the advent of spatial audio renderers in the live entertainment industry, channel-based mixing solutions are being replaced by object-based mixing solutions. These processors are first used by system technicians. But above all, they are mixing tools. New companions of sound engineers and artists appear: software for positioning an audio object in the sound field. These interfaces have to be integrated into the wide show ecosystem, including mixing consoles, show controllers, tracking systems, potentially lighting and video.

How to make this possible since everyone uses his own language and protocol. One can talk MIDI, another OSC, PosiStageNet or a proprietary protocol. Do we need complex tools to translate a language into another? Or can we have a common vocabulary?

Leading audio manufacturers have worked together to come up with an OSC specification that everyone can use to easily interoperate. This is ADM-OSC, which has just been presented at the AES convention in New York early October.

Wings of Imagination: The Affordances of Sound in Museum Exhibitions
Wednesday November 20, 2024 13:30 - 14:30 CET
Museums have been described as exhibitionary complexes and scopic regimes, both concepts stressing their orientation towards display and visuality, what Martin Jay has also characterized as ocularcentrism. However, new technologies have enabled other modalities, most notably sound, to become ingrained in contemporary exhibition design.
According to media theorist Marshall McLuhan a hot medium is relying on one sense modality in high definition requiring low participation from the audience. A cool medium, on the other hand, provides less detailed, or fragmented, information requiring more participation. Thus, following the ocularcentrism of exhibitions, they could be considered as hot media environments. Consequently, also including sound in the exhibition design could be considered as a cooling of, or tempering of the media environment, requiring, or enabling, more participation from the visitor.
Thinking along with McLuhans temperature metaphor, and applying it to exhibition design, we explore the affordances of sound as a tempering of the media environment of exhibitions that simultaneously requires and enables visitors to use their imagination more actively in the meaning-making – giving wings to their imagination, metaphorically speaking. Thus, sound provides exhibition designers with opportunities to engage in more complex storytelling.
We substantiate our argument with illustrative examples from the H.C. Andersen’s House in Odense, The Viking Sorceress exhibition at the National Museum of Denmark and the exhibition Might and Magic in the ruins underneath Christiansborg Castle in Copenhagen.
We discuss whether a more temperate, or balanced, media environment can counteract the ocularcentric bias of the exhibition medium and afford more complex meaning-making experiences. We argue that such an approach, placing more demands on the visitors’ participation and engagement, might appeal to some visitors but alienate others. Finally, we challenge the premise of McLuhan’s temperature metaphor and discuss how certain ways of using exhibition sound might actually “heat up” the experience rather than “cooling” it down.

Safe Listening Practices for Audio Engineers
Wednesday November 20, 2024 14:00 - 15:00 CET
Recent studies on hearing health have led to a new understanding of how temporary "ringing of the ears" and other short-term warnings to sound exposure should not be ignored. If there is a safe sound exposure level, it is lower than previously thought.

The latest findings on safe listening are summarised, including short-term and long-term consequences of overdosing. Medical data is compared to hazard-based requirements on sound levels in Europe, and a best practice for audio professionals is outlined.

We will also discuss seeding reasonable listening habits in our children, the first generation that could potentially benefit from a better understanding of common threats to hearing in modern life.

Introduction to Immersive Formats and Envelopment
Wednesday November 20, 2024 16:00 - 17:00 CET
Auditory Envelopment (AE) is an elementary, perceptual quality of sound, capable of inducing pleasure and emotion in the listener. AE is not the same Listener Envelopment (LEV) used in acoustical engineering, and immersive audio formats have a higher capacity than stereo to influence AE in listeners.
We describe and exemplify recordings, mixes and distribution formats of immersive across a variety of genres. Examples of the new AE dimension are also given - from intimate to grand - as well as five deadly sins of how to miss its potential pleasure, including bad acoustics of listening rooms.
